Beira Baixa Tradition and Symbolism

According to Monsanto tradition, young women of marrying age would place marafonas on the bed to protect the home from storms and ward off the evil eye. On the wedding day, they were kept under the bed, since without eyes, ears or mouth, they see nothing, hear nothing and can tell nothing, thus preserving the couple's intimacy and attracting fertility.
