ORGANIC PRODUCTION METHOD - Plants and plant products and Industrialized products*
Organic farming is a farm management and food production system that favors the preservation of natural resources, the promotion of biodiversity, and the application of animal welfare standards. It is based on Regulation (EC) No. 834/2007.
Organic plant production contributes to maintaining and increasing soil fertility and protecting it against erosion.
This production method guarantees that food was produced in harmony with biological processes, promoting the sustainable use of natural resources. The use of chemically synthesized fertilizers, pesticides, or veterinary medications is restricted, favoring the use of organically produced products, natural or derived substances, and low-solubility mineral fertilizers. Organic products are free of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
To ensure that organic products are produced in compliance with the European Organic Farming Regulation, operators' activities at all stages of production, preparation, and distribution are subject to a control system. Therefore, it is mandatory that each organic product correspond to an Organic Production Method Certificate, and that all operators involved in the product certification process have a contract with a Control Body.
KIWA/SATIVA, as a Product Certification Body, carries out agri-food production control activities, with the aim of guaranteeing consumers complete traceability of the chain of products it controls and certifies.
The European certification body code for KIWA/SATIVA organic agriculture is PT-BIO-03.
